Atletico Madrid Confirm Signing of Mario Hermoso on 5-Year Deal

Atletico Madrid bought a second defender in less than 24 hours on Thursday when they signed Spanish global centre back Mario Hermoso from Liga rivals Espanyol.

Former Tottenham fullback Kieran Trippier is delighted with his move to Atletico Madrid.

Trippier wasn't included into Tottenham Hotspur's pre-season squad, so that he could explore his future options and make a final decision.

Atletico said the 24-year-old had signed a five-year deal.

"From watching Atletico over the years you see what he demands of his team, the work ethic".

Trippier has played 16 times for England scoring one goal, direct from a free kick in the World Cup semi-final loss to Croatia past year.

Trippier became Atletico's first English player for 95 years after officially completing his move on Wednesday, and follows in the footsteps of the likes of Beckham and Michael Owen in swapping the Premier League for La Liga. Hermoso is from Madrid and came through the youth system at neighbours Real.

"The most important thing is to get involved in the culture of the players and learn the language".

"A fantastic team, an unbelievable manager and I'm just looking forward to getting on with it now".

"I've always wanted to speak Spanish anyway and this gives me a better opportunity to do that".

Trippier made 38 appearances across all competitions for Tottenham in 2018-19, scoring one goal.

He also helped Spurs to the Champions League final for the first time in their history last season, where they were beaten 2-0 by Liverpool in Atletico's Wanda Metropolitano stadium. "I've always wanted to play overseas and what a place to play", Trippier told Atleti's official website.
