Barcelona beat PSG to sign 16-year-old English striker Barry

"Next season he will be part of Barca's Under-19 squad", Barcelona said in a statement yesterday.

Louie Barry's performances for West Brom's youth teams had caught the attention of some of Europe's top clubs and Barcelona have won the race to sign the 16-year-old.

The Express & Star understands West Brom and the FA have yet to ratify the move and that Albion are understandably frustrated at the loss of one of their brightest talents for a relative pittance, due to Fifa's flat rate for payments to clubs made from overseas for young players.

According to reports in The Guardian, Louie Barry apparently had his medical with Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint Germain (PSG) before the Catalans stepped in at the very last minute and hijacked his move, reportedly convincing him to join the ranks at La Masia, the club's famed academy.

The move, however, was not entirely ratified at that time, leading to reports of the Championship club being left furious with the manner in which the deal, which will only be worth £235,000 ($295,000) in compensation, was concluded.

The 16-year-old was offered a new contract at the Hawthorns but rejected the Baggies' offer in favour of a switch to Catalonia. It's believed he will commit his global future to England having scored seven goals in nine games.

Previous year he scored 10 goals in five games for England U15s during a tournament in Italy. He's penned a three year deal and will play for Juvenil A next season.
