Cuphead animated series ‘The Cuphead Show!’ announced for Netflix

The game will feature the eponymous Cuphead and his brother, Mugman, as they have to contend with their deal with the devil in a high-stakes gambling match. Both the companies are appointing some big names to work on the show, with the game's original creators serving as the executive producers for Studio MDHR, and C.J. Kettler serving as the executive producer for King Features Syndicate. "The Cuphead Show!" will expand on the story and world of Cuphead, presumably with the same 1930s rubber band style of animation.

I can't imagine that anyone who's played Cuphead won't be excited by this news. It's a ideal candidate, visually speaking: the game is deliberately patterned after the 1930s-era Fleischer cartoons, meaning it's created to not look more like a cartoon than your usual platformer in the first place.

The Cuphead Show is now in production, and no release date has been announced. The fact the game is frustratingly hard kind of builds on that "not for the kiddies" vibe - so it kind of worries me that its otherwise-blank page on Netflix is listed under the "Kids TV" genre. The streaming service is producing an animated series based on the game. At one time, they had literally sacrificed everything to make their idea a reality, turning what started out as a garage project, into an overnight success. Since Cuphead's 2017 launch, the zany, uber-difficult platformer developed and published by Studio MDHR has sold more than 4 million copies worldwide.
