House Democrats lead push to restrict Trump on Iran strikes

A Democratic House committee chairman says the Trump administration's now-abandoned policy of separating migrant children from their families as they crossed the U.S. -Mexico border was a tactic to discourage future immigrants but could damage the children for their entire lives.

The hearing came as the number of families, children and other migrants entering the USA from Mexico has surged above 100,000 monthly since March, overwhelming federal agencies' ability to detain them in sanitary conditions or move them quickly to better housing.

He also upbraided Ocasio-Cortez's chief of staff Saikat Chakrabarti and the progressive group Justice Democrats as "juvenile" and "ignorant".

In an interview with The New York Times, Pelosi was dismissive of the four newcomers, saying despite their big presence on social media, they only account for four votes in the Democratic caucus. Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-Texas) has decried the bill as "moving in a direction that does make America less safe". "This is a manufactured crisis because there is no need for us to do this". "It is one of morality". "We do not get anywhere by blaming the people who are doing their best to help these people".

The bipartisan measure was approved 251-170 with almost 30 Republicans joining almost all Democrats in support. All were among House members who visited border stations last week.

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) came to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's defense on Friday, amidst rising tensions between Pelosi and four progressive Democratic congresswomen known as "the Squad".

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-NY., left, testifies before the House Oversight Committee hearing on family separation and detention centers, Friday, July 12, 2019 on Capitol Hill in Washington.

Trump, who has had more than his own share of run-ins with Pelosi, came to her defense.

The figures reflected "a deliberate, unnecessary and cruel choice by President Trump and his administration", the report said.

Though several Republicans supported various amendments, none ultimately voted for the overall defense bill, which GOP leaders called a "shameful" attempt to play politics with a traditionally bipartisan measure.

Democrats accuse Trump of tolerating badly overcrowded and putrid holding facilities in a purposeful effort to discourage future immigrants.

A short time later, Pelosi marched her caucus members into a closed room to chide them for "tweeting about other members", the report said.

Also testifying Friday were Escobar and Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., who said federal treatment of migrants has "exceeded a level of degradation we should be ashamed is occurring on American soil".

"There are serious divisions, and it's more than just between Pelosi and AOC", Palmer said on "The Jeff Poor Show" earlier this week. The dispute has spiraled into a fight with racial overtones. The House also voted against measures from Reps.

Also raising political temperatures are Trump-ordered nationwide raids targeting people in the US illegally expected to start this weekend, according to administration officials and immigrant activists. They're then supposed to be transferred to government-run shelters. Twenty of them basically blew up Pelosi's bill.
