A little insight into one aspect of the way she approaches matches arrived via her answer to a question looking ahead to Saturday's Wimbledon final against No. 7-seeded Simona Halep.

But Williams, who will become the oldest woman in the professional era to contest a Grand Slam final on Saturday, is taking it all in her stride.

After tricky moments during the fortnight - dropping sets against qualifier Kaja Juvan in round two and compatriot Alison Riske in the quarter-finals, Williams is in the groove as her biggest test looms.

Reaching the final is a remarkable achievement in itself and not just because it means Williams has now played in the final of a Grand Slam tournament in each of the last 13 years.

The image of indifference that Serena Williams has been carefully constructing around the prospect of moving to a record-equalling 24 Grand Slam singles titles was summarily undressed as a ruse on the eve of this final with Simona Halep - by the person who has guided her to this point.

"There's so many impressive things about her", Williams said of Halep.

The 37-year-old Williams, a seven-time Wimbledon champion, will be playing in the semifinals at the All England Club for the 12th time. Of course, I respect what she has done and what she's doing.

"I'm in a different place, because I wasn't really playing a month ago, like, at all".

"I have learned that I have a chance". This week, in an article in Harper's Bazaar, she reached out to her Flushing Meadows conqueror, Naomi Osaka, in a reprise of her case against Ramos, blaming the media for the furore.

Not only has Serena owned Halep over the years, but we have a hungry player who is desperate for her 24th grand slam title and isn't sure how many more chances she'll get beyond this given her age.

Serena Williams celebrates her win. "I know I'm improving and I just needed to feel good and then I can do what I do best which is play tennis".

"It's an wonderful feeling but I am also excited and nervous". If she claims her eighth singles title at the All England Club, it would be interesting to see if the men surveyed change their tune.

Since coming back from maternity leave in March 2018, she reached the Wimbledon and US Open finals previous year.

Serena Williams is one of the greatest tennis players of all time and the numbers back that acclaim. "It's just about going out there and giving my best effort, no matter what".

Having just watched a forehand victor whistle past her, Strycova double-faulted and fluffed an attempted drop shot to hand over the break of serve. Williams is seeking her first Grand Slam singles title since 2017, when she was pregnant with her daughter and won the Australian Open. She takes victory after having saved a match point against Elena Dementieva in the semi-finals. "But now I feel stronger, mentally, facing her".

But she has shown already she can deal with a partisan crowd having beaten 15-year-old Coco Gauff on Monday.

A "Plan B" or even "Plan C" could come in handy for Halep as Williams was at her devastating best in 59-minute destruction of unseeded Czech Barbora Strycova in the semi-finals.
