Kamala Harris reports raising almost $12 million in second quarter

"If you look at the issues I've been attacked on, almost every one of them is for something well before 2008", Biden said, according to prepared remarks.

The former Vice President told reporters in Charleston, South Carolina, on Sunday that he chose to apologize Saturday because it was "the first opportunity" he had to do it in a "fulsome" way in front of the Palmetto state audience who "would have been the most likely to be offended by anything that was said".

He pointed to what he called repeated missteps, including Biden's comments on segregationists and the former vice president's recent reversal on the Hyde Amendment, a long-standing congressional ban on using federal health care money to pay for abortions.

Biden noted that he and Harris have similar views of how to combat modern school segregation and said his goal in the 1970s and today is "to get to the root cause of segregation", which in many cases stems from housing discrimination.

Patricia Ousley, 69, a black retired state employee from the Chicago suburb of South Holland, cheered loudly when Biden told the crowd Obama does not get the credit he deserves.

During Thursday night's presidential debate, Harris criticized Biden for recently highlighting his decades-old work with segregationist senators and his opposition to busing school pupils during the 1970s, creating a dramatic and deeply personal breakout moment. He was one of the great presidents of the United States of America, and I'm exhausted of hearing about what he didn't do, ' Biden said of Obama.

"I had been wavering on Biden, but the debate took him off my list", said Karen Wiesemann, 74, of West Des Moines, who now, too, is taking a fresh look at Harris and some others.

The campaign said almost half a million dollars this quarter came from its online store, which sold at least 1,400 "That Little Girl Was Me" T-shirts that feature a photo of Harris as a young school girl.

Despite the thinly veiled jibes towards his rivals, it remains unlikely that Biden would pivot so radically from his affable "Uncle Joe" persona which positioned to be seen as an antidote to President Trump's aggressive posturing.

In returning to Iowa this week, Harris jettisoned a stump speech that centered on the vague notion of "speaking truth" and offered little clear reason for her candidacy.

The state senator Dick Harpootlian, backing Biden, said he had heard from some voters that they felt Harris's debate attack was "disrespectful".

In South Carolina, an early-voting state in the nominating contests that kick off next February, Biden delivered a speech responding to criticism by Harris about his track record on race.

US Senator Kamala Harris, riding a wave of support after her performance in the first presidential debate, raised almost $12 million in the second quarter of the year which ended on June 30, her campaign has announced. Segregation persists now not necessarily as a function of legislators.

When asked to clarify her position, she merely repeated, "I believe that any tool that is in the toolbox should be considered by a school district". "The general election is so important and we have to get behind whoever comes out of that primary". Senator Herman Talmadge of Georgia, he added, was "one of the meanest guys I ever knew, you go down the list of all these guys" but "at least there was some civility".

But some Democrats said there was still plenty of time for Biden to recover. According to a recent CNN poll, the California senator's support jumped to 17%, putting her second behind Biden's 22%.

Sunday, though, Harris did not speak much on race-related issues and did not mention her confrontation with Biden.

Although he was referring to the few seconds granted by moderators on the crowded debate stage, his words went viral on Twitter as a symbolic admission that he is a man of yesteryear in a party demanding radical change.
