New pictures, plot teaser dropped for Joaquin Phoenix's 'Joker' movie

It's encouraging to hear that Robert De Niro was so high on the script written by Todd Phillips and Scott Silver because he's a veteran actor. That's what was interesting to me.

But it's now Joaquin Phoenix's, 44, turn to step into the shoes of the most frightening villain of all time. And yes, he knows that's going to upset a group of fans who place a high value on that.

Now, courtesy of Empire Magazine, we have the answer: Joker won't be following the comics at all.

Even if Phillips does say that no specific comic inspired the movie, some fans can still draw similarities with Alan Moore's DC comic, The Killing Joke.

The Joker origin movie centers around the iconic arch-nemesis of Batman and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. The movie is an origin story of sorts, but beyond that, the plot details are under wraps. Regardless, Phillips made it clear that his team has full faith in Phoenix's ability to make the role his own.

"We had Federal Bureau of Investigation guys showing up to search the set", Phillips said. So far it seems as though this film will take a man named Arthur Fleck and literally give him many bad days until he reaches that breaking point and that is very much, a story I want to see told.

"I thank God no one's been hurt, and I thank the fearless and resourceful security and law enforcement people for protecting us", De Niro said in his statement.

Joker, also starring Zazie Beetz, Robert De Niro and Brian Tyree Henry, opens in Australia on October 3 and in the U.S. on October 4.

Phillips also told Empire that Phoenix was in their minds throughout the writing process, with a picture of the 44-year-old actor above his computer way before he was cast.
