Trump Punishes UK Ambassador Who Called Admin 'Inept'

May's Downing Street office says that while the leak is unfortunate, "Kim Darroch continues to have the prime minister's full support".

Prime Minister Theresa May gave her "full support" to Britain's Washington envoy on Tuesday but Donald Trump attacked the "wacky Ambassador" whose leaked memo had described the us president's administration as "inept".

"'The wacky Ambassador that the U.K. foisted upon the United States is not someone we are thrilled with, a very stupid guy, ' I imagine for example that Kim Darroch doesn't believe that aeroplanes were around in 1776".

In rare public disdain for a British prime minister, USA president Donald Trump assailed premier Theresa May for the "mess" she created over her handling of the crucial Brexit negotiations with the European Union and even welcomed her impending departure from office. A disaster! I don't know the Ambassador but have been told he is a pompous fool. "Tell him the US now has the best Economy & Military anywhere in the World, by far".

It came after Mrs May stood by ambassador Kim Darroch for the leaked diplomatic cables that branded the United States administration as "inept".

British officials said they were hunting for the culprit behind the leak.

The tweets, together with a similar barrage on Monday, will serve to ratchet up pressure on Britain's government over Darroch, who also has been accused by some Brexit-backing United Kingdom politicians of lacking enthusiasm for Britain's departure from the European Union.

Yesterday, Mrs May's spokesman said while Mr Darroch's opinions did not reflect the view of the government or ministers, he said the diplomat had London's backing and ambassadors needed to have the confidence to give their frank assessments.

But he said ambassadors needed to be able to provide honest assessments of the politics in their country, and the prime minister stood by Kim.

"The ambassador remains in post and continues to carry out his duties with full support of the PM".

It comes just a month after the Government rolled out the red carpet for the president for a state visit in which he praised the enduring strength of the "special relationship".

"You can't change an ambassador at the demand of a host country", Mr Hague told the BBC.

Sir Christopher said there was "range of possible villains" who might have been responsible for passing his dispatches to the press. In other memos, leaked to the "Mail on Sunday", the envoy described President Trump as "inept" and his administration as mired in chaos.
