William Saliba: Spurs rival Arsenal for Saint-Etienne defender

The Gunners have been eyeing the 18-year-old for the majority of the window but it is believed Spurs have offered a better deal than their rivals. Arsenal, however, are still confident that the player will keep his word and join the club.

"Negotiations between Arsenal, Saint Etienne and Saliba were in their very final stages - much of it already in the hands of lawyers to agree wording of contracts etc - but Tottenham have reignited their interest and are now pushing hard to get the deal completed", Ornstein wrote.

However, in a potentially huge blow to Arsenal, both from a football and a pride perspective, RMC's Mohamed Bouhafsi has shared information on Twitter about a late Spurs offer for Saliba that eclipses the bid submitted by the Gunners.

The news is a huge blow for Arsenal, who have endured a hard summer already in the transfer market.

The deal Arsenal had in place for Saliba would have seen him being signed this summer but spend the next season on loan back at St Etienne.

Emery's limited transfer budget has made it hard for the Spaniard to land his top targets, with Celtic demanding £25m for left-back Kieran Tierney while a £40m bid for Crystal Palace's Wilfried Zaha was given short shrift as the Eagles demand £80m.

Arsenal face having to give up a higher initial fee in order to beat Spurs, whose offer is all upfront.

Manchester United have also been linked with the Benfica centre-back, who has a release clause of £54m.

The Arsenal boss faces fresh problems at the back after Laurent Koscielny refused to travel to the U.S. for the club's pre-season tour.
