Eddie Jones warns of World Cup chaos after 'ridiculous' Barrett red card

Australian coach Jones has significant World Cup experience - he was in charge of the Australia team that lost to England in the 2003 final and was a consultant with South Africa when the Springboks won in 2007.

But Jones did leave the door ajar to a late call-up although he would not confirm if Te'o - or indeed anyone else - was on a standby list.

"I'm not going to go into reasons why he (Te'o) was not selected", Jones said at a press conference.

Rhys Patchell and Jarrod Evans look set to provide flyhalf cover for coach Warren Gatland, who will announce his 31-man squad for the World Cup in early September. "But we've had that discussion and he's not in our top 31 players at the moment".

"We have had that conversation with Ben, he understands it".

Sevens specialist and 2016 Olympic silver-medallist Ruaridh McConnochie continues a remarkable year by being present as the only uncapped player on the strength of an impressive end to his debut season for Bath.

"They really stuck to the game plan, played with a lot of determination and effort", said England boss Eddie Jones after the win against Wales. He did particularly well and again we thought we'd roll the dice and bring him into camp to see what he could offer.

"We'd like to take three in every specialist position but that would leave us short in other positions, so we've chose to go with two at scrum-half and two at tighthead", Jones said. I urge World Rugby - although I don't think they do anything at great pace do they - to get some consistency in that area because otherwise we will have games being destroyed by an inconsistent official making a decision on a law that's not clear.

"We want the squad to know early and now we can get on and be the best prepared England side there has ever been, ready to win the World Cup".

But captain Owen Farrell insists England can be trusted in the Far East and that there are no bad apples in the squad.

Jack Nowell is likely to have to go into the World Cup having played no competitive rugby for nearly four months.

England then travel to Kobe to face the United States on September 26, before games against Argentina on October 5, and France on October 12.
