Hurting Serena withdraws from Cincinnati as US Open looms

"Of course", the-19-year-old sighed/grinned during the downtown Toronto draw ceremony when she learned she would be facing fellow Canadian Eugenie Bouchard in the opening round of her hometown tournament, the Rogers Cup.

American tennis star Serena Williams has withdrawn from the WTA Cincinnati Masters due to back injury. Right after her withdrawal from the Rogers Cup 2019 final, Serena flew to Mason, Ohio for the Cincinnati Open 2019.

Her decision was made to tearfully withdraw from the event.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion, who experienced the same back spasms in the Rogers Cup final which gave the title to Canadian Bianca Andreescu, suffered the second blow just hours before her scheduled match began. With that win, Andreescu is now ranked No. 14. "This week hasn't been easy on it, so I'm going to listen to it".

She telegraphed going for an overhand smash but then just tapped the ball to drop her shot neatly in bounds.

"I'm sorry I couldn't do it today, I tried but I just couldn't do it. I mean, we all go through things differently, but I have an idea of what it's like to be injured and having to pull out of matches", Andreescu told The National's Adrienne Arsenault in an interview on Monday.

Williams's retirement was the last in a string of high-profile injuries at this year's Rogers Cup.

"I really hope that I can crack the top 10 now and play in the WTA Tour finals by the end of the year".

But they say the Grand Slams are what separate the really great from the rather good, so while Andreescu has achieved more in the past calendar year than any Canadian, on the men's or women's side, her major moment awaits. After winning Indian Wells in March, she rehabilitated a shoulder injury.

Williams' status for the U.S. Open, which starts August 26, is unclear.

"I try to channel that pressure into something good", said Andreescu. "But I wasn't thinking of pulling out whatsoever". "I didn't want to pay attention to that".
