The police had earlier informed people on Twitter about an ongoing area in Sydney's Central Business District (CBD).

NSW Police said they received reports of a man walking along York Street with a knife around 2pm.

A man is seen being arrested on Clarence Street in Sydney.

A woman's body has been found in a building near the vicinity of a stabbing rampage in Sydney's CBD.

Elsewhere, the body of a woman has been found at a unit on Clarence street.

"Police and NSW Ambulance paramedics located a woman inside a hotel, who had a stab wound".

The blood soaked attacker was screaming "Allahu Akbar" - allegedly killing one woman inside a unit and stabbing another in the back at a nearby pub. She has been taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Police said they had received reports of the man's remarks, but had not yet determined a motive.

"People were still quite shocked, they couldn't believe what was happening".

"To approach a person... with clear evidence of a stabbing previously, these people are heroes", police spokesman superintendent Gavin Wood said.

Paul O'Shaughnessy, 37, said his brother Luke, 30, saw a man with a balaclava wielding a knife.

Video from the scene showed passersby chasing the man, armed with chairs, as he ran through traffic and leapt onto a auto roof.

The Sydney Morning Herald said several people had reportedly been stabbed, although there was no confirmation from officials.

A random dude just started stabbing people in the city right outside where we were having lunch.

"We had a window open to get some air in and then we just heard the commotion ... we looked out and saw him on top of a vehicle wielding a knife and we all just kind of reacted from there", said Mr Cuthbert.

There was fireys chasing him with axes and he went around the corner.

The man has been taken to Day Street Police Station.

"A number of crime scenes have been established", a spokesperson said.

Wood praised the bravery of bystanders who helped apprehend the man.

In footage shared on social media, the alleged assailant can be seen jumping onto the bonnet of a vehicle wielding a knife.

Motorists have been told to avoid King St due to the operation.
