The Phillies getting desperate with Charlie Manuel return

Manuel, who now works as senior advisor to the general manager, will assume the position for the remainder of the 2019 season. Slugger Rhys Hoskins went 2 for 24 on the trip and has just one RBI this month. He led the team to a World Series title in 2008. He worked as a scout, a minor-league hitting instructor and most recently an adviser to general manager Matt Klentak.

NBC Philly's Jim Salisbury reported more staff changes are still being discussed. Bernstein called it a "power move" by Maddon given Phillies manager Gabe Kapler's shaky status.

As for Mallee, he's served as Phillies hitting coach since the start of the 2018 season. He came under fire during the team's recent slump, which saw them fall from first in the division to fourth behind the Mets.

At the moment, Philadelphia owns a record of 60-58 and is three losses behind the St. Louis Cardinals for the second Wild Card spot. Expectations were huge coming into the season but the results have brought mostly underachievement. Manuel is about as old-school of a coach as you can get, but he's had great success in his career with the Phillies and Indians. This season, the Phillies rank ninth in runs and 12th in OPS. But really, their offense has been bad by every measure. Receive comprehensive coverage of your teams and stream the Flyers, Sixers and Phillies games easily on your device.
